STATISTICS ON AGRICULTURE IN TANZANIA


ARABLE LAND

As of 2016, Tanzania had over 44 million hectares of arable land with only 33 percent utilization in cultivation. Land is a vital asset in ensuring food security. The nine main food crops in Tanzania are maize , sorghum, millet, rice, wheat, beans, cassava, potatoes, and bananas.

POPULATION DEPENDENT ON AGRICULTURE

The primary source of income for almost 70 percent of the population living in rural areas is agriculture.

CONTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURE TO GDP

Agriculture accounts for over 27 percent of Tanzania’s GDP and provides employment to majority of the population.

SMALLHOLDER FARMERS

As of 2017,over 75% of Tanzanians were employed in the agriculture sector of which the smallholder farmers are the biggest group as a whole.
